I had the privilege of working with sound designer Darrin Verhagen on the play "Moth," directed by Briony Dunn, during my secondment. The play ran at Theatreworks in St. Kilda from May 18th to June 3rd, 2023. "Moth" explored dark themes and incorporated elements of magical realism.
Working alongside Verhagen, a seasoned professional in the field, proved to be a valuable learning experience. Together, we aimed to create a soundscape that would transport the audience into a realm of wonder. Inspired by the play's magical realism, we carefully crafted atmospheric textures, evocative melodies, and sound effects to complement the narrative and evoke emotions.
Collaborating with Verhagen and Dunn allowed me to push the boundaries of my creativity and technical abilities. We exchanged ideas, techniques, and artistic sensibilities, resulting in an elevated sound design. This experience served as a turning point in my career, fueling my passion for sound design and deepening my appreciation for its impact in theater.
The secondment on "Moth" expanded my skills and reinforced the power of sound as a storytelling tool. I am excited to continue pursuing new opportunities and applying the knowledge gained from this collaboration. The experience with Verhagen has left a lasting impression on my professional journey, driving me to create immersive soundscapes that captivate audiences and enhance their theatrical experiences.
